LETS LAYER: How to Layer Your Nightly Skincare

LETS LAYER: How to Layer Your Nightly Skincare

Want to approach your skincare regime like a pro?

The secret is to layer your products in the proper order to ensure your skin receives the FULL benefit of each ingredient. An easy rule of thumb - lightweight to heavy! First apply thinner, water-based serums to ensure antioxidants penetrate the skin, then follow with thicker, richer oils to lock in moisture and protect the skin from outside pollutants.

As your skin naturally repairs itself at night, your nighttime routine should be all about treatment and giving your skin what it needs. Assess how your skin looks and feels - If your skin is looking dull, then exfoliate. If it is irritated, hydrate and protect.

Sounds a little complicated? Don’t worry, MERME has you covered and here’s our step-by-step guide to your nighttime skincare regimen for flawless, glowing skin:

1. Double Cleanse

We recommend cleansing your face first to get rid of the day’s grime, dirt, oil and makeup. Better yet, try double cleansing, which involves starting with an oil cleanser to remove make-up and to break down any other natural oils in the skin. Our Nourishing Body Remedy can also be doubled as an oil cleanser. Follow with a gentle milk or gel cleanser to remove all excess residue, sebum and dirt that was loosened up by the first step. This leaves your skin fresh and perfectly prepped to absorb your skin regimen.

2. Exfoliate

We recommend exfoliating two to three times a week with a clay mask or chemical exfoliator. Our Deep Clean Facial Mask will clear out the pores, extracts blackheads/blemishes and gets rid of dead skin cells, to allow for subsequent products to penetrate the skin to allow new skin cells to form. While, our Facial Brightening Vitamin-C Powder will encourage cell renewal and in turn, enhance skin's barrier function and reduce damage of free radicals and external pollutants during the day.

3. Mist

After your face has been thoroughly cleaned, it is important to start rehydrating and nourishing the skin. We suggest spraying a mist, toner or essence such as our Facial Antioxidant Mist. Since this is lightweight, almost water-like formulas, apply them after cleansing and exfoliating your face. We recommend spraying our mist on face before applying serums and oils as it will help products to penetrate deeper into the dermal layers of the skin for ultimate hydration.

4. Serum

Next, apply serums while the skin is still damp - this will help to seal the antioxidants into your skin and help the serum to penetrate the skin’s dermal layer (plus will also mean you use less product). Serums are super-concentrated, nutrient-dense treatments that address

specific concerns, so it’s better to layer first to ensure they are absorbed into the skin deeply.

We recommend using a lightweight, water-based serum like our Facial Hydration Serum to instantly hydrate the skin. Our Facial Hydration Serum is made of pure Hyaluronic Acid, which acts as a magnet for moisture to the cells so that your skin looks hydrated, plump and healthy. Hyaluronic Acid occurs naturally in the body and can attract up to 1,000 times its weight in water. As we get older, our body stops producing as much Hyaluronic Acid which results in early signs of ageing like fine lines and wrinkles. Our Facial Hydration Serum absorbs quickly and deeply into the skin to help revitalise the outer surface layers, so your skin feels and looks smoother and softer.

5. Eye Cream

Aside from addressing crow’s feet and dark circles, eye serums can serve to protect your delicate eye area. Generally, you should apply your eye cream like our Advanced Eye Therapy before your further treatments so your eye are can absorb the oil, without dilution with other face products. Our Advanced Eye Therapy is packed full of vitamins, like E and K, essential fatty acids and antioxidants to restore elasticity, reduce fine lines and dark circles under the eyes.

6. Facial Oil

Lastly, apply your thickest product like an oil and/or cream to lock in the antioxidants, moisture and protect the skin from external pollutants. MERME Facial Beauty, Healing or Balancing Elixirs will help to retain moisture and nourish the skin, without suffocating or exacerbating oiliness. Our oils penetrate deeply and quickly to hydrate, revive, brighten and insure my face against fine lines, dark spots, dryness and ageing inflammation. It will protect your skin from any dust or dirt that may be hidden around your house (guilty!).

Timing Matters Too

At MERME, we understand that most of us are in a rush to get somewhere (or hit our bed), so our advice is to keep your skin care routine simple. If you have many steps, pause for a bit (30 seconds) to allow each product time to react with the skin. For example, at night, after I cleanse my face and apply my Facial Hydration Serum, I just wrap up my day and get into bed. I keep my Facial Beauty Elixir on my bedside table and apply it right before I go to sleep to allow for the serum penetrate the skin before I seal them in with my oil.

Another piece of advice? Listen to your skin. Remember that you are unique and that nobody else has your skin. It’s important to stick to organic skincare and find what works for you, while always being kind to your skin.
