SERIES SKIN TYPES: Get oily and combination skin under control once and for all

Tired of your shiny skin, clogged pores and unexpected breakouts (especially after last night's chocolate session)?

We are all with you.

As sufferers of oily and combination skin, we know all too well the problems of glowing complexions, proneness to breakouts and clogged pores. And to be honest - it can be a real nuisance. Especially when you wake up in the morning of an important presentation or that dream date with a massive (and uncoverable) pimple. For women with combination skin, in addition to the oily T-zone, there is also the problem of dry cheeks - a real dream...

Unfortunately, the predisposition of our skin is in most cases hormonal or influenced by the genes. However, it can also be a sign that the skin is not in balance. Oily and combination skin occurs when the body produces too much sebum. These natural "oils" are responsible for blackheads, congestion, and breakouts. This can happen when the skin's natural oils have been stripped away, most often with harsh cleansers and scrubs. Our skin then craves oil to hydrate and protect itself, so it produces extra sebum to make up for the deficiency (crap!). And now we can say hello to blemishes and blackheads in the T-zone and extremely dry cheeks.

But don't lose hope! Follow my daily skin care routine to get rid of pimples and reduce the overproduction of sebum - for a permanently clear complexion (in 99% of all cases).

Claire's recommended routine:

cleaning

Clean and then clean again. The so-called "Double Cleanse" method is super important so that all the make-up and dirt of the day is really removed from the skin. Start with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup and other oils on your skin. Our Nourishing Body Remedy is also an excellent oil cleanser. Oil cleansers are especially good for combination skin as they dissolve makeup (even waterproof mascara) while being gentle on the skin.

Follow with a gentle cleansing foam or gel to remove any residue and really clean pores.

peeling

Important! I exfoliate regularly (2-3 times a week) with our Deep Clean Facial Mask. The frequency depends on how clogged your pores are. Combination skin types should focus on the T-zone and areas with particularly large, clogged pores. Regular exfoliation cleans the pores, refines the complexion, reduces blackheads and blemishes, reduces hyperpigmentation, sloughs off dead skin cells and allows new skin cells to appear fresh and radiant. A win-win situation! A clay mask like our Deep Clean Facial Mask helps draw impurities out of the skin, leaving your skin cleansed and detoxified. Plus, she's fun to take selfies (or scare your friend)!

cure

On days when I want an extra boost, I use an L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) mask like our Facial Brightening Vitamin-C Powder to tighten my skin and make it appear more radiant. I can't stress enough how important it is to use Vitamin C that really works! Be sure to use powdered vitamin C stored in a tinted jar like ours, as it loses its potency when exposed to air and light. Vitamin C helps stimulate cell renewal, supports the skin's natural protective barrier and reduces damage from free radicals and external environmental toxins throughout the day. Perfect for us oily skin types.

toning

Toning is an essential step in balancing the pH of your skin and allowing subsequent products to penetrate deeper into the skin afterwards. Use a spray toner with high-quality antioxidants like our Facial Antioxidant Mist. Antioxidants are your face's protectors, neutralizing free radicals and preventing them from causing breakouts and hyperpigmentation. Our Facial Antioxidant Mist beautifully neutralizes and tones skin before your serum or cream.

Face Oil (with Booster)

Facial oil on oily skin? You must be kidding me?

Don't worry, facial oil can actually work wonders for oily and mixed skin types! The oils in our elixirs are completely different from the problematic ones that are produced (too much) by our skin. When you apply a high quality, pure face oil - like our Facial Balancing Elixir - your skin stops producing too much sebum/oil (causing breakouts and shine). Instead, our elixirs moisturize your skin and regulate natural oil production. Using our Facial Beauty Elixir or Facial Balancing Elixir can help clear blemishes, congestion or other skin problems. With combination skin, it is particularly important to maintain the skin's moisture level in the less oily areas, such as the cheeks.

FUN FACT: Jojoba oil, the ingredient in our Facial Balancing Elixir, is so similar to the skin's own sebum that it can stop its overproduction. It is known to rebalance oily and mixed skin types while providing a moisture boost. This is essential as oily skin is often dehydrated as well - I know we don't have it easy. The oil acts as a lipid layer on your skin, locking in moisture and ensuring your skin is protected from environmental toxins and air pollution that clog pores.

Add a booster!

When my skin needs extra attention, I add a booster to my elixir. Choose from our three boosters - Congested, Balancing and Clear Skin Boosters - to help clear your skin, prevent the growth and spread of bacteria and unclog clogged pores. Its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties help oily and acne-prone skin long-term and even reduce acne scars. I switch between the three boosters depending on what my skin needs at the moment.

Finally: humidity, humidity, humidity

I know you probably can't hear it anymore, but drinking enough water is the key to clear skin. You'll never find me without my 1.5L water bottle (a really heavy accessory). Water is Mother Earth's medicine, hydrating your skin from within. We oily (yet dehydrated) women need as much water as possible!

And that was it! My guide to getting oily and combination skin types under control. I really hope that it will help you with this tricky thing of dealing with oily, blemish-prone skin. But let's not forget: excessive oil production also means we won't age as quickly. A win in the long run!

And if you do eat chocolate, please enjoy – take the worry out of breakouts with our step-by-step guide for oily and combination skin.

SKIN TYPE SERIES: Taming Oily / Combination Skin Once and For All

So you're OVER your shiny complexion, clogged pores and unexpected blemishes (thanks last night's chocolate fix).

We get it!

Man, do we get it.

Us oily and combination skin sufferers are characterized by our skin's shininess, proneness to blemishes and congestion of pores. And to be honest, it can be a real pain. Especially waking up the morning of that big presentation or before that date with your dream guy with a massive (and uncoverable) zit on your chin. Combination girls also have the added bonus of dry cheeks, but an oily T-zone - the joys!

Unfortunately, our skin's disposition to blemishes is usually hormonally affected or genetic, but it can also be a sign of imbalanced skin. Oily / combination skin occurs when the body overproduces sebum, which is the natural “oil” our body produces that causes blackheads, congestion and blemishes. This can happen when the skin's natural oils are stripped away, usually after we overdo it with harsh cleansers and exfoliants (or too much cheese). Our skin is left craving oil to moisturize and protect the skin, so tries to fix it by overproducing sebum to compensate (dammit!). Then, hello blemishes and blackheads on T-zone and extremely dry cheeks.

But don't lose hope! Follow my daily skin care ritual that helps to banish breakouts and subside overproduction of sebum, and helps me to achieve and maintain a perfectly clear complexion (99% of the time).

Claire's suggested routine:

cleanse

Cleanse, and then cleanse again. It is important to 'double cleanse' to ensure that all your make-up and the day's dirt / build up is removed from the skin. Start with an oil cleanser to remove make-up and to break down any other natural oils in the skin. Our Nourishing Body Remedy can also be doubled as an oil cleanser. Oil Cleansers are especially great for combination skin types because they will dissolve all makeup (including waterproof mascara) yet are gentle enough to not strip your skin. Follow with a gentle foam or gel cleanser to remove excess residue and ensure pores are left squeaky clean.

exfoliates

Often! I exfoliate with our Deep Clean Facial Mask regularly (2-3 times a week), but it is dependent on how clogged your pores are. Combination skin types should focus the mask on just the T-zone and areas of particularly clogged pores. Consistent exfoliation clears out the pores, refines your skin texture, extracts blackheads/blemishes, fades pigmentation, gets rid of dead skin cells, and allows new skin cells to come through all fresh and glowy. It's a win win! Using a clay mask like our Deep Clean Facial Mask will help to draw out impurities in the pores and leave your skin clean and detoxified. Plus it's fun to take selfies (or scare your boyfriend)!

treatments

On days where I want that extra oomph - I use a L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin-C) mask to brighten and tighten my skin, like our Facial Brightening Vitamin-C Powder. I cannot stress the importance of using a Vitamin-C that actually works! You must us Vitamin-C that comes in a tinted bottle and in powdered form like ours, as it loses its effectiveness when exposed to light and air. Vitamin-C helps to encourage cell renewal and in turn, enhance skin's barrier function and reduce damage from free radicals and external pollutants during the day. It's a no brainer for us oily and combination skin types.

clays

Toning is a crucial step to rebalance the pH of your skin and to allow the following products to penetrate the skin more deeply after. Use a spritzing toner with good quality antioxidants like our Facial Antioxidant Mist. Antioxidants are basically a bodyguard for your face which neutralize free radicals and stop them from running riot causing blemishes and pigmentation. Our Facial Antioxidant Mist will neutralize and tone the skin before your serums and creams.

Face Oil (with booster)

face oil? On oily skin? You HAVE to be kidding!

But fear not, face oil can do tremendous things for oily and combination skins! The oils in our Elixirs are completely different from the problematic ones produced by our skin. By applying a high quality, singular face oil - like our Facial Balancing Elixir - your skin will not overproduce excess oil / sebum (which causes breakouts and greasiness). Instead, our Elixirs will work to hydrate the skin and regulate the natural oil your skin is producing. Therefore, using either our Facial Beauty Elixir or Facial Balancing Elixir can help to clear up blemishes, congestion and otherwise very angry skin. Combination skin types should be particularly mindful in maintaining the moisture levels on the less oily areas of the face, like their cheeks.

FUN FACT: Jojoba oil, which is the ingredient in the Facial Balancing Elixir, almost perfectly mimics the skin's own sebum so halts the skin's overproduction of it. Its known to balance and restore oily and combination skin types, while instantly boosting moisture (which is essential because oily skin is often dehydrated – I know, we can't win!). Applying an oil will act as the skin's lipid barrier which will seal all that moisture in, and ensure your skin stays protected against pollutants / dirt in the air that eventually will clog your pores.

Addon: BOOSTER!

When my skin needs extra attention and TLC, I add a booster to my Elixir. Choose from one of our three boosters - Congested, Balancing or Clear Skin Booster - to help disinfect the skin, curb growth / spread of bacteria and alleviate clogged pores. Their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties will help to control oily or acne prone skin long term and reduce the appearance of acne scars. I rotate between using the three depending on my skin's needs that particular day.

Lastly, hydrate hydrate hydrate

I know you're probably sick of hearing it, but drinking water is key to attaining a clear complexion. You will never find me without cradling my 1.5L water bottle (it's a heavy accessory). Water is mother nature's medicine and will help to hydrate the skin. Us oily (but annoyingly still dehydrated) girls need all the water we can get!

And there you have it! My guide to conquering our oily / combination skin type. I really hope that this will help you navigate the tricky terrain we have been dealt with our oily, blemish-prone and problematic skin. But let's be real - our excess oil production means we are NOT going to age as fast. Short-term loss, long-term gain!

So please, have your cake, and eat it too - you don't have to worry about break outs with our step by step guide to taming oily and combination skin!
